Under the direction of the Executive Special Education Director, the Out of District Coordinator will be responsible for implementing and managing effective, compliant, and cost-efficient special education services for eligible students who require special education placements outside of the district, as well as extended school year services.

 

Essential Functions and Duties of the Position: The essential functions and duties listed below are intended as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed.  The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.

  • Monitor the provision of services to and the programs of individual students placed out-of-district, including ongoing communications and site visits
  • Facilitate three-year re-evaluation, manifestation, and annual review IEP Team meetings for students placed in out-of-district programs  
  • Ensure IEPs meet all regulatory and district standards, are written to reflect best practices, reflect high-quality programming, and are implemented with integrity
  • Consult on complex special education student cases involving possible transfer to an Out-of-District placement or the return from an Out-of-District placement.
  • Participate in and coordinate transitions of Special Education students from school to school, program to program, and to post-secondary opportunities
  • Communicate with community agencies as needed regarding services for students with special needs
  • Ensure students eligible for Extended School Year (ESY) are secured for their program, and communicate to the Executive Director of Special Education
  • In collaboration with special education directors and school-based special education coordinators, plan and coordinate the in-district Extended School Year Program 
  • Prepare special reports as requested by the Executive Director of Special Education 
  • All other duties as identified by the Executive Director of Special Education and the Assistant Superintendent of Student Support Services

Education and Experience:

  • Master’s Degree, with specialization in special education
  • DESE License as an Administrator of Special Education  

Skills, Abilities & Knowledge: 

  • Depth of knowledge regarding special education laws, regulations, processes and procedures
  • Strong interpersonal and written/oral communication skills enabling information sharing and the development of trusting relationships with parents, staff, outside evaluators, advocates, and administrators 
  • Skill in interpreting assessments and determining educational interventions in response to a learning profile
  • Demonstrated skill in meeting facilitation, case management, communication and pedagogy
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage the special education referral and team process 
  • Experience supervising and evaluating staff

Compensation and Benefits: 

Please review the Unit B Contract and this page to learn more about employee compensation and benefits. This position is compensated between B7 and B12 based on level of education with a work-year of 200 days.
