General Responsibilities of the Mathematics Coach Specialist;.  

 

Job Description

Under the direction of the Principal and the K-5 Director of Mathematics, the Math Specialist/Coach will provide student centered support and coaching for classroom teachers to extend their capacity to teach mathematics to all learners.  Responsibilities include:  direct support to students and teachers, leading professional development, helping teachers to use research and benchmark data to inform practice and make decisions regarding instruction, resource materials, and curriculum integration.  The focus of the position encompasses the areas of intervention and extension and is intended to support, not replace, the instruction delivered by classroom teachers.

 

Essential Functions and Duties of the Position

The essential functions and duties listed below are intended as illustration of the various types of work that may be performed.  The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position:

 

1. Provide Direct Support to students 

2. Support classroom teachers in an on-going co-teaching approach involving co-planning lesson design and differentiated instruction.

3. Deliver direct instruction to students who are either struggling with mathematics or who dramatically exceed existing grade level benchmark.

4. Meet with and work collaboratively with a leadership team consisting of building leadership, Literacy and math Coaches

 

Education and Experience

  • Masters Degree preferred
  • Classroom teaching, including math experience
  • DESE Math (Grade 1-6) Certification preferred; 1-6 elementary licensure preferred
  • Experience with Illustrative Math and ST Math preferred

Skills, Abilities & Knowledge

  •       Must have deep understanding of math content along with sophisticated understanding of developmental needs of student acquisition of mathematical knowledge.
  •       Must have working knowledge of Massachusetts Curriculum Framework for Mathematics, both content and practice standards.
  •       Must be a highly motivated, self-starter who can work both independently and collaboratively.
  •       Must have ability to collect and analyze data in order to make recommendations for instructional programming and professional development using best practice
