Needham Public Schools is an inclusive, dynamic, and multicultural community seeking an energetic, skilled, and warm 7th Grade English Teacher (Long Term Sub) to join our team. This position is scheduled to begin November 13 (or as soon thereafter as possible) and anticipated to conclude on December 20.

Under the general supervision of the English Department Chair, and working collaboratively with the 7th grade ELA department team, this teacher will be responsible for advancing students' critical reading, thinking, and writing skills. As a Pollard Middle School educator, this teacher will work collaboratively with a "cluster team" of teachers who share the same students to build positive student experiences, engage in community building, and reinforce the attributes, skills, and knowledge made explicit in the Portrait of a Needham Graduate.

 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Plan and teach 4 sections of English and work closely with members of the English Department to support student learning and growth.
  • Teach content and skills in English language, literature, and composition, using standards-based curriculum guidelines from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education
  • Adapt district curriculum materials and methods to develop relevant assignments that guide and challenge students
  • Set learning goals for all students, create cognitively demanding tasks, and model the belief that that all students can master challenging material through effective effort
  • Assess students’ understanding regularly with ambitious learning goals in mind and takes ownership of making necessary adjustments to instruction to reach goals despite setbacks
  • Demonstrate passion for and optimism about their students, their content, and the teaching profession
  • Scaffold and differentiate instruction to encourage and support all students 
  • Use instructional practices that are likely to challenge, motivate, and engage all students and facilitate equitable, active student participation
  • Build a productive learning environment where every student participates and is valued as part of the class community
  • Engage with families and builds collaborative, respectful relationships with them in service of student learning
  • Perform other related duties as requested by the English Department Chair and/or School Principal

Required Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's degree
  • MA DESE certification in English at the appropriate grade level
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience working with and/or teaching middle school students, and an understanding the diverse needs of students at this age
  • Collaborative work ethic, training/experience in the use of instructional technology
  • Commitment to inclusive pedagogy, and the potential and willingness to contribute to student life 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree
