Job Summary:
The ideal candidate will be prepared and willing to teach both health education and physical education for wellness outcomes to students in grades 9-12.  This requires a commitment to holistic health and wellbeing and the ability to help students connect learning in both disciplines to broader wellness goals (physical, social, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, occupational/leisure). 

 

Position: 
The Needham Public Schools seeks outstanding and highly motivated applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences for the position of High School Wellness Educator (Health and Physical Education).

 

Position Responsibilities: 
The successful candidate will plan and teach lessons in both health education and physical education for wellness outcomes, as well as work collaboratively with members of the department to support student learning, growth, and wellbeing.

 

Qualifications: 

Looking for candidates with diverse backgrounds and experiences who have good relational skills, strong fundamental teaching skills, and knowledge/experience with ropes courses, group dynamics, general outdoor/adventure education, self-defense, yoga/mindfulness, games, sports, and physical activities. Additional knowledge and/or experience teaching skills-based health education (including sexuality education) and applying the Teaching Games for Understanding curriculum model is important.

 

A minimum of a Bachelor's degree is required; a Master's degree is preferred. Candidates should be certified in both health and physical education, or be certified in physical education and willing to become certified in health within the first 3 years of teaching in Needham. The successful candidate will be expected to integrate wellness concepts into their lessons and promote wellness within the larger school culture (among students, teachers, and parents/guardians).  NOTE: NPS Wellness Department has adopted the wellness model promoted by the National Wellness Institute:  https://nationalwellness.org

 

In addition, the candidate should possess good communication and interpersonal skills. They should have experience working with and/or teaching high school students; an understanding of the needs of students at this age; a collaborative work ethic; training/experience in the use of instructional technology; a commitment to inclusive pedagogy; and the potential to contribute to student life beyond the classroom.

 

License:
Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education license as a high school physical educator.  A secondary license in health education will be expected within the first three years of teaching in Needham.
