Job Summary:
The Needham Public Schools seeks a passionate and dedicated long-term substitute Wellness Teacher to teach health education to students in grades 7-8. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to promoting holistic health and well-being, helping students connect their learning in health education to broader wellness outcomes, including physical, social, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, and occupational/leisure dimensions. The health curriculum will include topics such as Nutrition, Sexuality, Drug Education, and a unit on Growth and Development.
Job Responsibilities:
- Plan and execute quality health lessons in a variety of areas (e.g., Nutrition, Sexuality, Drug Education) for students in grades 7-8.
- Collaborate with a team of wellness educators to develop and evaluate programs, curriculum, assessment, and teaching methods.
- Promote the value of health and wellness throughout the school and community.
- Work with other middle school teachers to integrate curriculum and develop creative programming.
- Liaise with professionals from other disciplines (e.g., counseling, health services, food services, community organizations) to enhance curriculum and create programming.
- Help create additional health programming as identified by individual school needs.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Demonstrates the ability to work with diverse populations of staff and students.
- Possesses a strong understanding of wellness and the ability to integrate wellness concepts into their program, promoting wellness within the larger school culture (among students, teachers, and parents).
- Understands wellness as holistic and multidimensional.
- Is currently certified as an American Heart First Aid Instructor.
- Demonstrates some level of special training in sexuality education.
- Has experience or knowledge in the areas of fitness, yoga, nutrition, and drug education.
Required Qualifications:
- Massachusetts DESE license as a 5-12 Health Teacher.
- Bachelor's degree.
